Luther (played by Idris Elba) has been missing from TV screens since the end of its fourth season in 2015.
Since then fans have been eager to jump back in to Luther’s world and venture into new storylines which will include their favourite characters.
Tuesday will see the triumphant return of DCI John Luther, alongside his unlikely partner Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).
And Ruth is excited to return as her character once again for the BBC show.
She announced: “I love playing her. There’s a real joy to Alice.
“And I think in the context of the show, it’s quite useful to have a character like that who can bring lightness to it.”
Ruth went on to explain: “Even though she does dark things, she does it playfully and I think the audience enjoy it for that reason.”
On returning to dive into her character’s shoes once again, she added: “I love coming back. The first day coming back was just a joy. It was wonderful to see the old crew.”
Expanding on her comments, Ruth continued: “We have lots of characters coming back so it was like an all-star reunion and it’s been really fun to do.”
Although it is as of yet unknown who these supposed returning characters will be, it is sure to be a shock for everyone.
Ruth concluded by describing the upcoming season in five words, saying: “The new season of Luther is violent, funny, fast-paced, brilliant characters – old characters, new characters – that’s more than five words but I don’t care!”
Fans of the show will remember that Alice was apparently left for dead off-screen in the fourth season of the show.
Could this also be pointing towards what is to come for the returning characters of the show?
It looked like Justin Ripley (Warren Brown) was killed in season three by Tom Marwood (Elliot Cowan) – but could there have been more to his attack than viewers saw?
If Justin were to return he may be out to take down Luther after he allowed him to get caught up in a case that would ultimately see him being shot.
Justin spent most of season two trying to convince the police Luther was innocent of Zoe’s (Indira Varma) murder.
Meanwhile Luther is still up against the infamous crime boss George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide).
Luther first bumped in to George when he tracked him down and chained him to a radiator to question him.
But George retaliated by putting a price on Luther’s head, causing the criminal underworld to attack the detective.
Could George be set to bring out some old nemeses of Luther’s in season five?
Luther season 5 will be released on January 1 on BBC One at 9pm
