The keto diet is something which many people believe is an effective way for them to lose weight. It consists of high-fat, adequate-protein, and low-carbohydrate foods – forcing the body to burn off fats rather than carbohydrates. As slimmers don’t consume as much carbohydrate as their body would expect, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The latter then passes around your body, and replaces glucose – which is usually produced in other diets – as an energy source.
This state, known as ketosis, can see some people lose weight.
However, there have been reports of adverse effects stemming from this way of eating – such as constipation and the keto flu.
This reaction is given its name due to the flu-like symptoms some people experience when they first cut the carbohydrates and start the keto diet.
So, what exactly can you eat on the ketogenic diet?
With the diet plan seeing a limit of around 20-50 grams of carbohydrates per day, the keto diet may require slimmers to change what they typically eat.
For instance, high-carbohydrate foods such as bread, potatoes, and fruit, will typically be off the menu.
Instead, keto dieters can consume low-carbohydrate vegetables, such as kale, broccoli, and spinach.
Unlike many other diets, high-fat foods are allowed on the keto diet, so those following the diet plan can tuck into butter, cream, and avocados.
Dark chocolate also makes the list, as do berries – which are an exception to the no fruit rule.
Meat and poultry are also key ingredients for meals on the keto diet.
What’s more, according to a study from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, it’s recommended that you opt for grass-fed meat.
That’s due to the higher amounts of omega-3 fats that are present in this type of meat.
Eggs, which are often recognised for their protein content, can also be eaten on the keto diet.
So, can the keto diet really work?
Well, it seems that the eating habits helped boxer Tyson Fury to shed the pounds – with the 30-year-old losing an impressive 10 stone.
His coach Kristian Blacklock devised his diet plan, and said: “Tyson’s not a massive veg lover, but we do find there are things he will have.
“There’s a peanut butter chicken recipe we’ve had on this camp which has been his favourite, cooked by his chef Tim Alcock.
“If you’re enjoying your food, dieting it a hell of a lot easier.”
